Dementia carers walk pilot launches next month in Watford

Watford Borough Council and Cathartic CIC are launching their ‘Think about living with dementia’ programme in October that’s helping carers – and the people they care for – experience the joy of walking and socialising once again.

The event will give carers the opportunity to voice concerns and discuss difficulties they face, with discussion topics including dementia care and support services available. To coincide with the walk, those with dementia will be able to enjoy activities organised by Cathartic CIC separately.

A pilot event - which is already fully booked - will be held on 1 October to coincide with the Watford Business Festival organised by the Watford Chamber of Commerce, where businesses will also be encouraged to become dementia friendly. If businesses would like to support people with dementia to live well in their communities, they can find out more at

Based on the success of this pilot, the Dementia Steering Group will look to continue this project on a monthly basis. The activities will importantly give both the respite they deserve and the ‘Think about living with dementia’ programme will hopefully move across the borough to help support people across the whole town, especially for those who have difficulties with access to transport.

Health issues, financial problems, isolation, loss of confidence, depression and loneliness are just some of the problems that carers and those with dementia face. However, it has been shown that people involved in walking schemes like this report physical, mental and emotional benefits from the very simple fact of getting together and enjoying an outdoor mini-break.

Elected Mayor of Watford, Peter Taylor said “People with dementia and those who care for them absolutely love the exercise and sociability that walking entails, but they frequently come across barriers. However, in partnership with Cathartic CIC, I’m glad to say we are working towards breaking down these barriers with ‘Think about living with dementia’, so that friendships can be made, great activities will be enjoyed and new people will be regularly welcomed. If you would like to get involved, please make sure you contact us”
